The German producers are Phillipp Kreuzer (maze pictures) and Joe Neurauter (Occupant Entertainment) who will be realizing the project with the producers David Katzenberg, David Sandberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, Aaron Schmidt and Philip Westgren. Michael Fassbender, Conor McCaughan and Pelle Strandberg are executive producing. Licensing rights for German-speaking territories are with Tobis. Bloom Media will be handling international sales. In addition to principal shooting, a substantial part of the VFX design will also be realized in Bavaria.
David Sandberg will be directing and taking on the leading role. He also collaborated with Tyler Burton Smith on the screenplay. Further leading roles will be taken on by Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Hasselhoff, Elza Gonzáles and Eleni Young. FFF Bayern is supporting the production within the framework of the funding program for international co-productions with two million euros.
David Sandberg financed the short film Kung Fury with Kickstarter and presented it in 2015 at the Festival de Cannes in the Directors’ Fortnight. The short film references American blockbusters from the 1980s, was nominated for the European Film Award as Best Short Film, and with over 29 million Youtube views, is one of the most widely seen short films worldwide.
The sequel to Kung Fury, which will be shot in numerous areas all over Bavaria, is set in 1985 in Miami. Like the short film, the feature film will also be shot in the genre of the action comedy: The invincible policeman Kung Fury and his colleagues, the Thundercops, have to stop a gang of anarchistic hooligan werewolves.
Within the framework of this program, FFF has also supported Oliver Stone’s Snowden, Lisa Langseth’s Euphoria, Rupert Everett’s The Happy Prince, Jason Lei Howden’s Guns Akimbo, and Jonathan Jakubowicz’s Resistance. The awarding is decided by a sub-committee of the Awards Committee. Funding for Die Biene Maja 3 (see separate press release) was also awarded the day before yesterday.
