Oscar foreign-language shortlist includes "Toni Erdmann"

Maren Ades’s FFF-funded comedy Toni Erdmann will advance to the next round of voting in the foreign-language film category for the 89th Academy Awards. The film about a free-wheeling dad out to shake up the life of his more corporate-minded daughter was greeted as a critical favorite when it debuted at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Two more FFF-funded films made the list: The  German-Russian co-production Paradise by Andrei Konchalovsky's  about a noblewoman who sheltered Jewish children as well as Iran's The Salesman, a psychological thriller about a strained marriage from director Asghar Farhadi.

The nine films on the shortlist will now screen for committees in New York, Los Angeles and London, who will cast the ballots for the film nominees in the category, to be announced Jan. 24.

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.  The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
